Earlier this month, my wife and I were able to get over to the coast for a MUCH needed weekend away (thanks sis!). We had the opportunity to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium for free to have appetizers and wine with Kazu, the aquarium's sushi chef, but opted for a hike around Point Lobos instead. I should also mention that if you like sushi and are in Monterey, go to Kazu's restaurant, Sakura. It's right on Lighthouse Ave before it turns into Central. Good sushi from a good soul. More images from this trip to come!

While browsing my files last night, I came across these images that I had made, intending to process into an HDR, 2 years ago. But I didn't have Photomatix and I wasn't pleased with the results of using Photoshop's "Merge to HDR". So I finally processed the image last night using Photomatix's latest sofware and I am very pleased with the results. What do you think? Comments welcome below.

Click thru to see the image as it looks fresh out of Photomatix prior to any processing in Photoshop.

Ok so this image isn't a part of the series of posts I had intended to make over the next few days, but due to a storm causing a power outage and cutting off my internet access, I'm stuck posting an image that has already been uploaded to the net. I'm posting now from Bill's office on my lunch break. Though this image isn't part of the series mentioned in my last post, it was taken in my back yard so it does fit in that sense.

An upside to this storm, other than the much needed water, is that my kids are loving the snow. Six+ inches on Sunday night and a couple more last night! Bill and I will be delivering some of his prints to the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Valley for an upcoming exhibit of his and we are hoping to time it to photograph Horsetail Fall, so the snow is good for the water run off of the falls too.

In any case, enjoy and as always, comments are welcome.

The next few posts will be of images all made within 5 miles from my home in midday light. I hope to show that you don't have to travel to far off destinations and always wait for the "golden hours" to make good images. In fact, photographing close to home should give you an advantage since you are already familiar with the area. As for light, photographs are there to be made in all matters of light at all times of day. Being observant and exercising your creative vision is key. This is what makes photography so exciting to me.
